SUMMARY: See the bottom of the summary for game highlights!
The Tomball Bobcats started off the 2018 season with a huge victory against the highly ranked Madisonville Broncos at Northland Christian Stadium. The positive opening shows a vast contrast as the Bobcats were eager to bounce back from a disappointing 2017 season that was plagued with injuries.
The Bobcats won the toss for the opening kickoff and moved the ball down the field with several good connections made by QB, Richard Allen. Unfortunately, the drive stalled on the Broncos side of the field so the Bobcats defense would take the field. On the very first play from scrimmage for the Broncos, Strong Safety and Player of the Game Dee Watson , generated force a fumble recovered by outside linebacker, Emanuel Ayers of the Bobcats. With both teams looking a little rusty on offense, and both teams defense playing well, the first quarter would end scoreless.
The second quarter would be more eventful as Tomball was able to gain the lead early with a 4-yard run by Kione Hampton bringing the score 6-0 Bobcats. To continue the momentum, they established in the first quarter, Tomball’s ball hungry defense once again stopped the Broncos pass heavy offense with a leaping interception by Safety and Defensive Team Captain, Brandon “Dingo” Wilson at the 1-yard line. The Bobcats defense didn’t have much time to celebrate, however. With the long field ahead of them the Bobcats offense was not able to get out of their end zone, and gave up a safety to the Broncos defense bringing the score to 6-2 Tomball.
Building off the defensive stop, the Broncos were able to take the lead late in the second quarter with a 34-yard pick six interception returned for a touchdown putting the Madisonville Broncos over the Tomball Bobcats at the halfway mark 8-6.
The Bobcats defense came out strong in the second half once again, having held the Broncos stalling offense scoreless in the first half of the game. Strong Safety, Dee Watson would once again come up big stopping Madisonville’s opening second half drive with a 46-yard interception return for a touchdown. This put the Bobcats back on top early in the third quarter with the score 12-8. However, the Bobcats lead was short lived as the Broncos answered right back with a 46-yard touchdown strike of their own to reclaim the lead 14-12. After several stalled drives, Tomball found an opportunity in the red-zone and was able to reclaim the lead for good on a 37-yard field goal by kicker, Shamus Donahoe, giving the Bobcats a 15-14 Bobcat victory 2018 regular season play.
The Bobcats travel to San Antonio on March 3rd to play the Do’ville Tigers in week three action. Head over to the game page for more game and location information HERE. This will be another good test for Tomball as the Tigers were a playoff team in 2017 and are well respected within the TUFA league.
